For each country I am going to keep a running list of random things I observe about that country. Here is my list for Honduras:
1. It smells like wood fire and car exhaust all the time. Some times one or the other. Sometimes both.
2. The coffee is amazing. It has to do with how they dry the beans out. Other places they remove the shell from the bean before drying it out. In Honduras they leave the casing on so you get really rich coffee without the bitterness. You can brew Honduran coffee as black as night but it still won’t be bitter.
3. Riding in the back of trucks is awesome, but it does hurt your butt after a while.
4. Fooooooood. Everything tastes amazing.
5. There are dogs everywhere. They will straight up chill in the middle of the road. We had a running game of “Honduran Dogs: Dead or Sleeping?”
6. Everything comes in bags. Water, juice, refried beans, everything.
7. The oranges aren’t orange. They are yellow or green but they still call them oranges…
8. Mantequilla with EVERYTHING. Mantequilla is their version of sour cream but it’s much sweeter. It comes in bags and you put it on everything, even pancakes.
9. Don’t flush the TP. It goes in the trash can by the toilet. The plumbing can’t handle the paper.
10. Sometimes there is power, sometimes there is running water, sometimes there isn’t.
11. Doritos taste different here. There is also a type of chips that straight up smells like lettuce.
12. Coke and all other soda tastes sweeter
13. Rules of the road aren’t really a thing. You better hold on tight and be ready for some close calls. And yet somehow you don’t really see accidents.
