For our first month, my team is doing a program called Unsung Heroes. We are on our own for finding housing and our ministry will be finding future contacts for future Racers. Until we get to our final location of Pleven, we are spending time in the capital of Sofia. Here are 11 things I’ve observed, day one on the field:
1) It’s very disorienting to hear and see a language that has zero resemblance to your own. I can’t even master how to say hello!
2) Hostels are fun. You meet interesting people and shower in weird ways.
3) Even though the language is hard, most everyone speaks English, and most everyone is very nice.
4) The currency is lev, which is about half of what a dollar is worth.
5) Bulgaria is 7 hours ahead of home, which means I’m basically nocturnal now.
6) Most everything to eat so far has been breads and pastries and it makes me want to worship. I can’t imagine being here with Celiac disease. Also, it is all FANTASTIC.
7) There’s so much to see in the city. Street performers, ornate cathedrals, shops, stray dogs, you name it.
8) The adventure of living out of a backpack gets old REAL quick.
9) The weather. Is. Perfect. Sunny with a high of 75 (except it’s in Celsius). Also, sunnies <3
10) Being on an all women team is the BEST.
11) Finding our own place to stay has been stressful to say the least: If you know of anyone in the Pleven area that would be willing to house 6 missionary women, or of any Christian organizations there, send me an email at [email protected].
We are pressing on and trying to find a home for the next few days! We would love your prayers as we follow the Lord into the great unknown! Talk to you soon!
