April 28, 2013. 915pm. Atlanta Airport. I just finished taking pictures of Ashli reuniting with her sister Lesley and we begin to walk to the arrival area. All our squad mates were reuniting with family and friends and in mid conversation with Lesley I turn and see Matthew, who was supposedly in Jamaica, walking towards me. I yelled “Matthew, oh my gosh, are you kidding me?! You are supposed to be in Jamaica!” And I ran into his arms, squeezing him as tight as I could. It felt so comforting to me to be in his arms again. I couldn’t believe the love of my life had shown up to surprise me on my layover. It wasn’t just to visit though. I quickly realized he was there to ask a very important question.
He said, “Amy I love you so much, I came here to ask you a question.” Next thing I know he is pulling a box out of his back pocket and getting down on one knee, “Will you marry me Amy?” He asked. I put my hand over my mouth at the sight of him on one knee holding the most gorgeous ring. “YES Matthew I love you! I want to marry you!” I kissed him and then he was back up on two feet asking if I wanted to put it on. At this point all his friends’ covers were blown. Kyle, who was posted up on a wall in a black hoodie, Mallory, who had been sitting hiding behind a book, and James who was around another corner were all out in the open snapping pictures and capturing video.
The ring fit perfectly. The ring is PERFECT! Here is a photo if you want to see the beautiful gem.
I turned around to an audience of racers, pointed at Matthew, and yelled, “I am going to marry this man!” Everyone began clapping and I was so happy. Can you believe I didn’t cry? I think I was in shock and overwhelmed with excitement that my boyfriend was now my fiancé and my dream of spending my life with him was falling in to place!
Little did I know that Ashli and her sister and all of Matthew’s friends had known about this for months. I tried introducing them and they already knew each other! They had all been in on it. Matthew had gotten together a road trip crew and had Ashli on the inside making sure I would be dolled up in a cute outfit with some good looking nails. I couldn’t believe they kept this secret so well and so long! I will remember this layover for the rest of my life.
Matthew had kept such a good secret that I actually got to be the one to tell my family and his that we were engaged! AHH, everything about the proposal was so fun!
If you are not acquainted with this wonderful man of God I suggest you read this blog I wrote to him a few months ago DEAR BOYFRIEND. It speaks all about his heart for the Lord and for me. I love Matthew Mitchell and I thank Jesus that he would give me this strong, gentle, wise, humble, driven, and brilliant man to lead me and my family.
Matthew, you amaze me and I look forward to spending my forever with you and Jesus.
