HI EVERYONE!! Over the course of the last month, my team and I have been working collectively on a blog to summarize our first month in Peru! My incredible teammate and storytelling leader, Ana, created this video to give you a glimpse into what the first month of ministry entailed. AWI (Alli Willaqui) means “The Good News” in Quechua. This is the name of the ministry that our team partnered with during our first month on the Race. Located in Huaraz, Peru, in the Ancash region, this organization’s mission is for all Quechua families to live according to God’s word. About 30% of the population in Ancash speak the native Peruvian language called Quechua. However, over time, the Quechua culture and language has been viewed as inferior to Spanish. For this reason, many locals in this region of Peru are ashamed to speak Quechua and dress in their traditional clothing. Many parents avoid teaching their children Quechua because they prefer to teach them Spanish or English instead. This is a sad predicament because what they don’t realize is that they are slowly losing this language if the perspective is not changed.
Almost 3 months ago, on August 10th, 2019, the newly translated Quechua Bible was released! We were so honored to have had the opportunity to work with AWI to promote this new Bible and encourage the locals to be proud of their culture/language. Most importantly, we helped spread God’s love and Gospel across many villages to multiple Quechua native speakers.
