When I first met Stephen, I was convinced that he wanted nothing to do with me because he was so quiet. One time he asked me how I was doing, and I nearly jumped I was so surprised. After that interaction, I realized that he just chooses his words wisely and uses them sparingly. But when he does have something to say, he says it truthfully and gently; the few words that he speaks are genuine and meaningful. He’s quiet, but his silence doesn’t stem from a place of insecurity; he’s extremely observational and aware. He’s really comfortable with silence and comfortable in his own skin. He doesn’t fit into the stereotype of being “the quiet one” – he’s just Stephen, he is confident in how he’s been created, and brings ease to whatever space he’s in.
I’m thankful for the uniqueness and safety that he carries.
WHAT’S HIS ROLE? Squad Leader. Squad leaders are with the Racers for the entirety of their nine months on the field. They’ve done either 11n11 or Gap Year once before, so they’re able to give clarity, vision, and guidance to the Racers. Essentially, they know exactly what they’re getting themselves into and what they’re giving up… and still do it. They are obedient and sacrificial. Each of them lead two or three teams, and are super intentional about forming relationships and giving spiritual/emotional guidance to people.
What do you offer people?
I bring safety; I used to think that being safe and being comfortable were the same thing. To be comfortable is to allow people to come and drop their baggage, say thanks, and walk away. Safety allows someone to bring their baggage and choose to open it and work through it. Safety creates space for and pushes people into risk and growth.
