It was a typical tuesday night in Chilé for team Vessel and Humbly United. We were all playing games, cooking dinner, and sharing experiences from ministry; learning about what the Lord is doing in each of our lives. Abby and I started making banana bread while jamming out to our favorite toons in the kitchen. Then all of a sudden we hear sirens blasting down the street, and see smoke rising up a few streets away, fading into sunset that lay behind. Our abuela’s face was filled with concern and quickly a group of us jogged down the street to see what all of the comotion was about. My heart sank when Abuela told us it was one of her co-workers houses that had erupted in flames.
As I looked at the scene in front of me, the world seemed to slow down as if moving frame by frame. I held my shirt over my mouth to avoid breathing in the black smoke that hung thickly in the air around me. I saw the flames lick at the sides of the house, and could feel the heat pressing all around. I heard the rapid shouts of Chileans all around, as people filled buckets with water in an attempt to extinguish the flames. But as Abby and I stood there hand in hand praying for the situation and watching the scene unfold around us, I was filled with the strangest feeling. When it enveloved me I was honestly astounded. Even though fear, terror and worry layed all around us, I felt more peace in those 20 minutes that I have in a long while. Although the situation itself was terrifying, I decided to tell my situation how big my God was. I prayed with an assured confidence in our Savior that He had this situation completely under control, and that He would show up.
Sure enough, as quickly as it started, the fire fighters were able to douse the flames, and the smoke began to subside. The look of concern faded from Abuela’s face as she hugged me tight and wispered,”Gloria a Dios” in my ear.
So no matter your how scary your situation is, tell it how big your God is. Because when we put our faith and confidence in Him, He will fill every inch of our core with His peace that surpasses all understanding.
