Here’s a quick update! So, have you ever heard of the country of Lesotho? Neither had I, until I signed up for the world race and saw that it was on our route! Lesotho separated from South Africa and became an independent country in 1964 (I think!) So it is very young and very proud to be a separate entity to this day. Lesotho is pronounced Le-sue-too and it’s motto is the kingdom in the sky!
We started our journey to Lesotho with an early morning van ride and got to the border between South Africa and Lesotho in the afternoon. Upon getting to the border we walked through customs and got the date of January 13th written onto our stamp. This meant that we could only stay in Lesotho until that date, and when we asked why the shortened time, we were told that it was a new rule. Our intention was to stay in Lesotho until the end of February and when we inquired more about the new rule we were told that because of an increase in car theft they weren’t allowing people to stay in the country as long. We talked to our regional director about this new rule and they hadn’t heard anything about the change. So we continued on to our final destination of Mokhotlong (pronounced like it’s spelled).
When we arrived in Mokhotlong we were met with a very warm welcome from our host family Pastor Obed and his wife Mehatsolo (sp?). The group of pastors from Harvesters Church Ministries all met us for dinner that night and even though our group was tired, they all made the time to get to know us and tell us about what God is doing in Lesotho. Mehatsolo started calling us her daughters from the moment we walked in the door. We spent an incredible week cleaning the school, weeding, planting tomatoes, doing devotions at the hospital every morning, feeding kids, prison ministry (sounds scary but was amazing), and truly growing to love Lesotho and it’s beautiful people!
When we told our hosts that we had to leave early because of our passports they didn’t question it or complain, they just said, God has something planned for you wherever you go. It was so special to get to work alongside this wonderful community and I am so thankful to be able to say that I now know about Lesotho. For the past week we have been in Hiedelberg, South Africa working with a local church and Bible college. Everyone has been extremely gracious and taken great care of us. You should also know that the other teams on our squad did not get dates written into their passports and are free to stay in Lesotho for the whole month. I’m excited to see what God has planned for us here in Hiedelberg!
