In the past week, I have been listening to the podcast Dig Deep by my friend Jessica Alston. I highly recommend it to anyone that loves podcasts, it is amazing. In a 4 part series called the Hungry Heart, Jess talks about the junk food “bliss point”, which is the perfect amount of salt, sweet, and fat that can satisfy us – temporarily. This bliss point is something that comes and goes very quickly, and thus we have to keep eating Cheetos and potato chips to keep reaching that bliss point, but it never will deeply satisfy us in any way, and we will keep filling ourselves with hollow things that give us no energy, but the illusion of happiness. Jess then relates this to our spiritual walk and the bliss point that is manufactured by the world. We come to the table of the world, nibbling on the little things that bring us temporary happiness and the illusion of satisfaction. We nibble here and there, and then there is seemingly no room left for us to taking long, lasting, filling gulps of God. But what we must remember is that nothing can satisfy us in the same way that God can. The world gives the illusion that we are happy and full, but deep down, there is a lasting emptiness and hunger that can only be filled with God and His wonder, mercy, and grace.
