Someone recently asked me about my passion and why I’m doing the World Race. The easiest way to sum it up is in one word: Irene (EE-rehn-ay).
Now you might be wondering, what’s Irene got to do with this? Well Irene was a young girl I met while serving in Guatemala about two years ago. I was serving as a youth leader for a youth mission’s trip. Irene came in late while we were doing a presentation for the kids that ate at the neighborhood soup kitchen. Since I was a leader, I was sitting amongst the kids to help keep them still while the youth did a drama and a short message. I scooted back to sit by her, and at first she kind of ignored me and acted like she didn’t care. But she got closer as the presentation went on. Once the message was over, the kids got up to get in line for food. I gave Irene a hug as she got up with her little brother to get in line for food. I didn’t think I’d see her after that. However, once Irene got through the line, she put her food down and came back over and hugged me. She held onto me until we left half an hour to an hour later.
You might not see the importance in that moment. This little girl had not eaten just so she could be near me. It truly touched my heart. That is why I’m so passionate about going on the World Race. The people I will be serving need to know that Jesus loves them so much. If I can be a pair of arms to hug them or helping hands to show them that love, I’ll do it. They don’t know about Jesus, until we tell them. I’ll be going to serve the “least of these” for 11 months in 11 different countries for people that are so desperate for something more. I’ll get to be the link that connects these people to Jesus. Sometimes we can be so concerned with our day-to-day, that we don’t stop to think about the people that need so much more than we do. I don’t want to be that person. I want to care for the widow, love the orphan, and support the needy. I’m going for them. I’m going for Irene.
