Last week I went to Jamaica with my roommates from college. It was beautiful. The beach and ocean, it was truly picture perfect. What made the biggest impression on me was the attitude of the people. The laid back, life will work out, attitude.
I am a worrier. I am anxious about all sorts of things. I seem to worry most about the things that are out of my control. The bible says, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:6-7). The people of Jamaica have a very relaxed attitude. It’s an attitude I want. I want the peace of God to guard my heart.
Sunday, May 1, the senior pastor interviewed me at my church in front of the congregation. I was anxious, nervous, uneasy, and scarred. I felt like I was going to lose my breakfast. I was about to go up on stage. There was just one song left to sing. I couldn’t tell you what that song was, but God laid his peace on me and reminded me to have a Jamaican attitude. Going up to the stage, I was still a little nervous, but God’s peace was in me. In the end everything went great. Life worked out.
