Yesterday, Years Ago: A Poem

Yesterday:

“Basically, there’s something blocking the pipes.” -I

“Hm. Sounds like a kidney stone.” -T

“What should I do?” -I

coffee, water, pain.

coffee, water, pain.

“Lord, please take it away, just let it pass.” -I

“Woo! I passed my kidney stone!” -I

“Wait, you had a kidney stone?” -Everyone

               Hello [person across the world],

I wanted to let you know that I am praying for you. I read in your interview that you are looking into overseas mission work. I wanted to see how you were doing in your pursuit of the Lord, and His calling for your life.

God Bless,

“Your false self is who you project outwardly when you don’t want people to see the real you.” -M

Years ago:

Wake up, mask on.

Smile so they don’t know you’re depressed.

Be a good Christian around the good Christian kids.

Be a thief amongst thieves.

Go to school high so they think you don’t care about anything.

Cover up those A’s so they don’t know you have potential.

Keep saying “I don’t really care what people think about me” so they think you don’t care what they think about you.

Swagger around so they don’t know you aren’t confident.

Act like you’re humble so they can’t see your pride in everything.

Ouch.

Get high again.

Be a burnout because you’re terrified of success.

Party, go wild so they think your mask is cool.

Tell them a bunch of lies and false stories so they admire you.

Chase girls so you don’t feel so alone.

Act tough and hit things so they don’t know you’re scared and weak.

Ouch.

Get high again.

Pop a Xanax, make your problems go away.

Make them laugh so they think you’re happy.

Go to bed, mask off.

Cry.

Sleep.

Repeat.

Yesterday:

“You’re doomed to put that mask back on.

You’re doomed to hide behind your false self again.

You’re doomed to run to drugs again.

You’re doomed to battle depression again.

You’re doomed.” –Satan

No.

I’m not.

“You are the salt of the earth.

You are the light of the world.

You are my child.

You are a friend.

You are chosen.

You are a witness.

You are justified.

You are united with me through Christ.

You are my heir and co-heir with Christ.

You are my temple.

You are joined with me.

You are holy, righteous, and redeemed.” –God

Yes.

I am.
