This month we go to a mountain side area multiple times a week called Oma. We go there to hang out with the youth playing sports, teaching English and playing with the little ones in a classroom. One of the days I had the life opportunity and pleasure to meet a kid named Moses.

Moses is a full deaf kid with a skin disease that also rots his teeth out no matter how many times he brushes his teeth. He lives with his grandma because his parents didn’t want him, he was looked at as a bad omen due to his condition. We became buddies this one particular day, we’re practically BFF’s now! He always comes running up to me jumping into my arms or immediately grabbing my hand to walk to his class. It’s honestly the highlight of my day going to Oma for that toothless little smile!

One particular day we walked around the compound we were at just playing and swinging him around. He looks down at the ground and point and finds a small simple yellow bottle cap and it lit up his world! Next thing I know we’re searching for bottle caps for the next 2 hours and just laughing the whole time. It was a game changer for him when I brought out my knife to dig one out of the mud. The next time we go there he literally got so much joy out of my watch

All this to say that I’ve come to a realization of simplicity. A pocket knife, a watch and bottle caps entertained this kid for hours. Stuff that I think is normal but in other parts of the world is not. Other parts of the world look at them as possible toys and games. Why do we try to over complicate things including the bible? Let’s go back to the simple things in life and have joy in even the small things.
