A few months back I got some pretty exciting news from my preacher that our church invested in podcasts! I never had one until then but everyone around me swears up and down by them so I bought in and got excited. Now, as I’m sure everyone else is, I’m addicted to them! But that’s besides the point, the point is one particular sermon by Dusty, my preacher, left me with a pretty big question. Who is God to me? A question that when asked I obviously went to the go to answer of, He’s my spiritual Father.

But than I actually stopped and took the time to think about it with more depth. Who is God to me? What is God to me? Is He just the creator or is He more? The answer is yes, He is the creator of all but He is way more than that to each and every single one of us. In fact He is so great that depending on who you ask and what they’re going through at that moment in life He may be something different. He may be a protector or source of laughter or even a crutch for a current bad situation.

After thinking about this for a while I decided to get other people’s opinions just to see how many things He can be. Let’s just say the answers blew me away with how many possibilities He had and how many He still has that wasn’t answered. Here’s the answers I got:

1) God is all knowing
2) God is a provider
3) God is comforting
4) God is the creator of all
5) God is love
6) God is my only hope
7) God is my Dad
8) God is my protector/covering
9) God is my guidance
10) God is a listening ear
11) God is patient and merciful
12) God is forgiving
13) God is the ultimate Father
14) God is my all in all
15) God is my friend
16) God is “my person”
17) God is a teacher
18) God is a safety net
19) God is my warm hug on a bad day
20) God is God

The simple answer is yes God is your Father, a father that wants to see you happy, a father that wants you to be with Him and vice versa. He hurts when you hurt and wants nothing but the best for you. He is, as my preacher said, “abounding in love to his children, a love that doesn’t always make sense and isn’t earned but also a love that is reckless.” God is so compassionate and gracious that He literally does not care what we’ve done, He just cares who we are. And who we are are His children, we are in Stevie Ray Vaughn’s words His “pride and joy.”

Not only is it important to think about that question but I also think it’s important to realize where God ranks in your life. I hate to admit this but at one point God was not my number one priority. Just like anything in life the more we invest in Him the greater return there is. If you practice the guitar everyday for an hour a day you’re going to be way better than practicing for only an hour a week. The more we invest in God the more we can learn about Him and love Him better and the more He comes through for us.

   Who is God to you?
   What is God to you?
Is He number one for you?
