My team and I arrived in Haiti on October 10, and we will be working with Mission of Hope, which is located in Titayen, until we head to Botswana on November 8.  Most of our time in ministry is spent doing SVT (Strategic Village Time) which consists of house visits in the surrounding villages.  We visit the houses, get to know the people, share the Gospel with them, and ask questions about their living conditions so that Mission of Hope can help them if needed.

One of the things which has surprised me most during SVT is the prominence of Christianity in the villages which we have visited.  However, many of the Haitians have misconceptions about Christianity and the church.  For example, many of them do not go to church because they do not think their clothes are nice enough.  Something else which has surprised me is how open the Haitians are with us during our visits.  During SVT it is not uncommon or rude for us to jump right into questions about the people’s faith and personal life even though we just met.

My favorite part about SVT is playing with the kids and holding the babies at the houses we visit.  Most of the kids we meet don’t waste any time holding our hands and jumping in our arms.  Some of the most memorable moments during SVT thus far include visiting a small orphanage where the kids sang Disney songs for us and prayed over us, meeting a 106-year-old Haitian woman, and getting pooped on by a baby I was holding  (it’s not uncommon for kids under five, especially boys, to be pantsless).

Please pray for my team and me as we continue our ministry in Haiti.  Please pray especially for the people we meet during our house visits.  Pray that God would prepare their hearts as we share Christ’s love with them and that God would provide us with the words to say.  Also, sharing our stories and the Gospel with several people each day in the hot sun can be emotionally and physically draining, so pray for enduring spirits for my team and me.
