Around four years ago I did something that was very scary for me.  I became a Christian by putting my faith in Christ.  This single action completely changed the way I viewed life and made me wonder what my purpose was.  Before I believed in God, I had tons of plans on how to become as successful as possible.  All of my plans revolved around me and money.  These are views that quickly changed and I grew to care about others more than monetary possessions.  Through my changes in thinking, I came across Matthew 5:13, which says; “You are the salt of the earth.”  It took me a long time to realize what this meant.  I eventually learned that salt is another term for faith.  Having salt means that I have faith and being the salt of the earth means I am to spread my faith to others.

With studying biology and nutrition in college, I often came across the importance of salt in our bodies.  Salt is a nutrient that is vital to our bodies.  A few of its functions are;

  • Helping our bodies retain water
  • Stimulating muscle contraction
  • Activating enzymes that aide in digestion
  • Activating ion channels that cause action potentials to be sent across our neurons
  • Activating  cell proteins involved with up-taking food and expelling waste
  • Nerve stimulation, brain function, and nerve communication
  • Making bones strong

Salt works like a network within our bodies.  One process signals another to either start, end, or stay neutral.  In one way or another, every bodily process is dependent on salt and our bodies cannot survive without it.  In a similar way, the kingdom of god is dependent on salt (people with faith).  It is through people that are intentional in their faith that the name of Jesus is continually spread throughout our world.  Similar to salt operating in our bodies, the spreading of God’s word is also a process.  The word started from Jesus and has been spread through thousands of people until it reached us.  God’s word is alive and it is through you and me that it continues to spread and change the lives of people all around the world.

I have found my purpose.  It is to spread the living word and show love to everyone I can.
