The Great Commission. Many people know of it. After Jesus resurrected from the grave, he gave his disciples one last command. And in Matthew, it is written,
“Go therefore, make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always to the end of the age.”
After this, he ascended into heaven to sit at the right hand of our Father. And so what did the disciples do? They went out into the world and preached the good news. They shared their testimony of the Lord most high. They risked their lives for the creator of the universe.
This month, team Tidal Wave is working alongside a church named Elis City here in Sunyani, Ghana. The pastor founded the church 4 years ago and it has been growing every year. When we sat down to talk with him about what the month is going to look like, he gave us one main objective.
He asked each one of us to find one person within the community, disciple them for the month, and hopefully pass them on to another member of the church where they can continue to be discipled.
Sounds a little like what Jesus told his disciples to do, right?
And so a couple days ago, my “commission” began.
The first thing I did was pray. I prayed to the Lord to direct my paths, to give me wisdom and discernment, to fill me with the Holy Spirit, and to clear my mind of my own thoughts.
Then, I listened. I listened for the Holy Spirit to give me direction on where I may go or who I may come in contact with. And the Lord told me to walk within the city and continue to pray.
So I hoped in a taxi and headed into Sunyani. As I was walking, I was lead to the community right across form the church. We had walked here a couple days prior inviting people to the church. I walked around a little, but because it was morning, there wasn’t many people out.
I continued to pray and felt lead to walk toward the market. I walked through the market and continued all the way to the end. And at the end, I came across an unpleasant smell.
The smell was raw meat. I had walked all the way to where the cows were slaughtered and then sold. As I looked around, I saw heads, legs, feet, and much more. As I was taking this all in, I heard a small voice.
“Hey!”
I looked around and saw a young man waving at me.
“How are you?” he said.
“I’m good. How are you?” I replied.
“Good. Would you like to buy some meat?” he said.
“Oh, no thank you. I was just walking around here and exploring.” I answered.
He then asked me what I was doing in Ghana and I explained to him that I’m a missionary working with a local church in town. I found out that he’s a soccer player and he works in the market a few days a week to make a little money. I learned that he’s a muslim which sparked my desire to share the gospel with him. I asked him if he would like to get together sometime to talk and he agreed.
Jesus tells us to go out and make disciples of all nations. To be bold, share the gospel, and build the kingdom. And when we obey, the things that God does in our lives are truly remarkable.
When I asked the Lord, the Lord gave me the direction to keep walking. And when I kept walking, that’s when I ran into this young man, Nani.
So later this week, I’m hopefully going to meet with Nani to share the gospel. To give him my testimony of how the Lord has worked in my life. To tell him stories and parables of the bible. To disciple him and allow the Holy Spirit to make him a disciple.
I ask for your prayers, not only for Nani and myself, but for the whole Tidal Wave team as we go out and make disciples, and win souls for the Lord’s kingdom.
Unitl next time,
Will
