Her
blue-green eyes meet mine as she reaches across the table, placing her small
hand in mine. With one last quick sip of my coffee, I set down my cup and lean
forward all the while wondering, “What is going on?” She begins to pray both
boldly and passionately for the passing ambulance on its way to or from some
unknown catastrophe. With a simple “amen” our hands release and I sit back,
silent and in awe.
A few moments pass and as I pick up
my cup of dark roasted coffee I gently ask her, “What is it that has happened
to a fifteen year old that provokes prayer for a passing ambulance?”
The story, her story, of a painful
past and touching today begins to unfold revealing a reconciled, redeemed young
woman in a passionate pursuit of the untamable, unstoppable God of Heaven.
I ask, “How will that story hinder
or protect your future?”
Her
reply,
“I know that I will never divorce,
that I will wait for a man that I can spend my whole life with. I will never
touch the drugs that caused so many past problems. Trust is a hard thing for me
now, but I will work on that…”
The
story goes on, but there in those moments I see such a beautiful passion to
live the abundant life that God has set aside for her. However, it is the “I
will” in her sentence that caught my attention tonight.
I missed
out on saying this, but my thoughts to her are this.
My dear
friend, “YOU ARE”. You are already running that race. You are already working
on those issues. You are already fixing your eyes on the God that has redeemed
you. You have a bright future ahead, one of blessings and life, not one of
curses and death.
With her
blue-green eyes fixed on Christ, she is pressing on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called
her heavenward in Christ Jesus.
You are never too young, never too hurt,
never too abandoned, never too sick, never too lost, to turn and walk hand in
hand with a God who adores you.
Tonight my heart is touched by the faith of a
15 year old girl who prayed for a passing ambulance…
