Freedom is a choice. Freedom is an action. Freedom is not a right.
I have fallen into the falsehood of freedom, believing that because I am a person, I have the right to be free. The notion is ridiculous, I have the right to die for my sins, and was given freedom for a cost. So no, Freedom is not a right, it is a gift given from God, that I, like I do with most of his gifts, tend to forget about it.
The belief that freedom is a right gives me power, and I like having power. But the crazy thing about having freedom without God, is it gives you chains. Looking out in todays society, I see a lot of “free” people.
The chains we make for ourselves come from the idea that what we do isn’t significant, we want to maintain our falsehood of freedom so badly that we can’t even see that we have already given it away.
What are we looking for to keep us free? I can see people chained to jobs, school, friends, drugs, alcohol, boys, girls, everywhere I look I see free people covered in chains blacksmithed by their own hands. Then I look down and see the ones I have made myself.
I am not saying that having a job, friends, or relationships is a bad thing. What is bad is when I let those things control me. Letting the money, the approval, or the feeling rule my life, is giving up the freedom given to me by God.
In Colossians 3:3 he says “For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God”
He said that right after telling us to set our hearts and minds on heaven. True freedom is gaining perspective. True freedom is having your heart and mind in heaven and your body on earth being God’s hands and feet.
True freedom is Freedom in Christ, not in the world.
