It’s not very often that I get to start working at a company and spend the first hour of the day in prayer. I’ve been looking for some part time work and I was lucky enough to get hired temporarily by a pair of brothers that I highly respect. Rick and Don Rush are a perfect picture of a good team and an interesting character study in brothers that are gifted and wired very differently. Rick is now one of the top sports artists in the nation, and his works are well known throughout the States. Part of the success of these paintings has been Rick’s talent, but another equally important reason for success is Don’s business skills and knowledge of running a company. The coolest part of it all, is that even after years of success, both of these men realize the only reason they have for success is the gift of God. Thus the reason we spent the first hour of the day in prayer.
Just getting to pray alongside Don was a huge gift and answer to prayer in my own life. I’ve been asking God to teach me how to pray for other people that aren’t directly in front of me. I love praying for people on the spot, but I very rarely think about it later. As Don and I prayed and racked our brains as to who else needed prayer, I was able to get a good picture of a man pursuing that type of prayer life. When our list ran out, we prayed that God would continue to interrupt us throughout the day if we needed it, and then prayed for a productive day. I didn’t fully know what the answer to that last phrase was going to look like, but I learned quickly.
At the amen of our prayer, we hit the ground running. I was quickly given a run down of the office and with a legal pad in hand, I took down the list of tasks I was given. Before I knew it, it was 4 o’clock, and my list was all crossed off. I don’t have a clue as to where the day went, but it was successful and productive. I don’t think Don even took a breather all day except for the 30 seconds he eventually took to eat lunch, but he constantly had something for me to do. It was a good picture of multitasking under control because while Don was able to do his own thing, he was also able to make the most of my day in the office. At the end of the day, we both walked out of the office with a deep breath and ready for the weekend.
So this was day one of working back in the States and I am definitely lucky to have found this opportunity. I wasn’t doing anything that was terribly exciting, or even that interesting to write about, but I was able to be a part of a business that is doing an incredible job as a ministry as well. Don and Rick Rush are two men that I greatly respect, and it was a blessing to be able to be a part of their work today. As I cleaned out the workshop today, I thought of one of my all time favorite quotes, “Everyone wants to start the next big revolution, but no one wants to do the dishes.” I know part of the reason I’m back home is to be a student and learn from some people around me, and today was a good start. Maybe I can live in the States for a season…
