There are certain people that just carry more weight in our lives than others. Throughout my journey, Scott has been one of my biggest supporters. It’s not just the random checks that show up every now and then, but it’s all the words and the constant battles out on the disc golf course that are included as well. I’ve loved having this guy look out for me and support me every step along the way. He has been like a mentor figure in my life and that’s why he’s always at the top of my list when I roll into Alabama.
One of the first memories I have with some one on one time with Scott was when he took me out to teach me how to play disc golf. The next two hours were some of the most frustrating and humbling hours of my life. I just couldn’t get the hang of it, and Scott was pretty good. I’m pretty sure he noticed me watching him so he made a few bad throws along the way intentionally. As frustrating as those two hours were and as foul as a person I was to be around, Scott stuck beside me and kept encouraging me.
Another solid memory of this guy was when we went down to Mexico and he helped lead a trip with our youth group. While we were out there, Scott was just attacked physically. He battled migraines and a torn shoulder the entire trip, but no one else realized it. Scott served our team with everything he had, and then passed out on the dining room floor while no one was looking. The pace he set was incredible and was a huge example for me of selflessness.
Now, Scott is in a place a heavy leadership. Where he belongs. Even if he is in Auburn and I’m not supposed to have friends from there, he is leading a staff and a recreation center that I have to be a little jealous of. Also, he’s learning how this leadership flows into his personal life as well as he is learning to lead his fiance into their next steps. Scott is leading a life a leadership that just marks his life. As much pressure as that might bring, he’s just being who he was made to be.
Now I know that Scott isn’t perfect and is working through his own life, but I’ve realized how important it is to have people around you that have gone before you. There are many people that I’ve learned from along the way, but Scott is a guy that has never sat down to teach me anything, but has taught me so much just by walking a little ahead of me. Like I’ve said so often, we need people around us. Scott is one of those important figures in my life and I pray you have others around you as well. There are some people we listen and learn from, and others we watch and learn from. I pray I have the humility to learn from people around me. It’s a much more fulfilling road to walk.
