It seemed mundane
It seemed selfish
It seemed natural
The experiences you need
Most times are unknown
The joys you will receive
Most times are pleasant surprises
The mundane became necessary
Selfishness stripped away
Their rights natural expectancies
Three months before the world race I needed to quit my job, raise money for the 11-month trip and spend money buying all gear I would need.
That was the reality check.
Losing my income, needing others to give me their money, and needing to spend money on myself.
Discomfort is a word that does not start expressing how I felt.
Fast forward.
Chile, a month where we discovered the sixth love language. We were welcome to their tables and served from the best they could offer.
Argentina, a month where we discovered community. We were poured into and encouraged to keep serving others to the best of our abilities.
Bolivia, a month where we discovered simplicity and tradition. Our small city of Uyuni, in the middle of a desert, showered us with humbleness and perspective.
Month 4, Kampong Thom, Cambodia.
New reality check dawns in as 4 days in Kampong Thom, Cambodia have gone by. That money I “missed” so much, “feared” raising now has brought me here… has been put into perspective.
This month we are partnering with “Good Seed School” a two-year-old school that has set their hearts to bless their community with a safe place, a flourishing environment whilst providing education in English.
This private school costs approximately what you call “petty cash” on your budget plans.
Reality check.
For a child in Cambodia to have a good education and be somewhere safe whilst their parents are in markets working, driving all day as taxis, the cost is close to 30 US dollars a month.
A sacrifice, a choice that a parent has to make for their child to have this opportunity.
My job now?
To develop the curriculum and lesson plans the teachers of this school will use. And to encourage these teachers on their daily tasks.
My fundraising?
It’s not complete – I am missing 3,797 dollars. I have 20 days left to raise … I need help, but I also need to be present and know that these people need me right here, right now. And that’s what I will do to the best of my abilities.
My gear? It has brought me to two continents so far, and it has allowed me to grow in unimaginable ways.
30 dollars. That was my reality check.
