“Tori, why you crying? You no charming when you cry…you charming when you talk and teach me English,” Nuay. Yes, it’s true…I was pathetically sobbing in this field (pictured behind) until one of my students, Nuay, came to console my breaking heart. Forming relationships and then waving them a goodbye only weeks later has been, by far, the most challenging aspect of my life lately. It’s tough to find words in the English language, or in any language for that matter (not that I speak any), to describe just how much these past two months in Asia have meant to me. And ever since first stepping foot in Asia almost three years ago, this lovely region of the world has continued to hold a special place in my heart. I think it goes without saying that I’m going to miss each of my students along with all of the charm and hilarity they brought to class each day! I sort of had a feeling Asia would, once again, leave me feeling the way I do. But being here again has showed me just how much I love people, and I realize that sounds super cheesy but it’s super true! If there’s one thing this experience has taught me it’s that, people are worth getting to know and are worth loving. Yes, there’s always going to be those few bad apples who spoil the fun for the rest of us, but the whole world isn’t full of bad apples. And until you stop listening to the voices in your ear and start going out and learning for yourself, you’re going to have a pretty difficult time deviating from a mindset about the world that society has ingrained in our brains for years. People are people and we’re all just trying to get by in our own way (whatever that may look like), so maybe the next time you have an unsettling confrontation with someone or flat out just don’t know what to say, realize this: almost any awkward confrontation can be mended with a simple smile and an understanding heart. So, if you’re still reading this, I encourage you to practice patience with people and try to learn from them, because we’re pretty incredible specimens and have a lot to teach one another if we’d just give ourselves the opportunity to do so!
