11 things I learned from Training Camp:

  • You have to fight for solitude. There are few moments where you are alone. Living in community 24/7 can be a beautiful thing but alone time is far and few between.
  • If someone tells you to eat a century egg- don’t. Also crickets have an odd crunch that I wouldn’t encourage-unless you like that kind of thing.
  • Don’t bring a real pillow because it gets real nasty in the rain and dirt.
  • Getting sick drained me- bring more meds on the race! Also my squad is awesome because they didn’t run away from all my obnoxious coughing!
  • Asking one person if you could pray for them can literally change someone’s day.
  • Worship and the outdoors are my love language. Ok I already knew this one but I realized how much these truly allow me to sit in God’s presence. I truly cannot find words for worship the last night of training camp but it’s a moment I never want to forget.
  • I learned more about Africa like the region we are going to is called the Sahel which is where the Sahara meets the rain forest. We have a cool opportunity to serve and meet folks from both North and Southern Africa and share the love of God with both peoples. I am even more excited to go to Cote D’Ivoire, Ghana, and Togo now.
  • Bucket showers are no joke, but you WILL adapt. It’s freezing in Georgia in October. Baby wipes are your best friend. Oh, and use the hose to wash your hair not the bucket shower (pro tip).
  • Community tent night was one of the best nights because 12 girls in a huge tent means a late night of getting to know each other.
  • Bring something to cover your eyes when sleeping in an “airport”. It’s bright in there!
  • I have no idea how to vlog but I want to because I REALLY want you all to experience the race with me.
