beauty

January 2011:

24=days of ministry

6=the number of times I bathed

4=the number of days I wore make-up

3=the minimum number of days I wore the same outfit before changing

1=the number of days I fixed my hair

0-1=the number of times I looked in the mirror during a day (only to put my contacts in)

And I was beautiful.

While in the DR, we had hiked six hours to a remote village to intercede for the people there and were midway on the way back when God hit me with that thought…

You are beautiful.

I was drenched in sweat.

Dirty.

You could probably smell my feet from a mile away.  Wearing the same nasty clothes as the day before.

My hair was matted to my forehead.

No make-up.

No mirrors.

At the moment, I didn’t exactly feel beautiful.

My mind wandered to Miguel, our guide the day before.

 He was dirty.

Old and wrinkled.

Wearing filthy raggedy clothes.

With crooked yellow teeth and a lazy eye.

But I was mesmerized by him.  He was absolutely stunning.

And God said it was time to redefine beauty.

Up until that moment, whether I had realized it or not, it had been defined by the world’s standards.  By Satan’s standards rather than God’s.

Clothes.

Makeup.

Hair.

Body image.

Youth.

Charm.

All external.  All superficial.  All a lie.

The Devil comes to steal, kill and destroy.  He is the father of all lies, the deceiver.  (John 8:44, John 10:10)

Time to redefine beauty…by God’s standards.

“Your adornment must not be merely external – braiding the hair, and wearing gold jewelry, or putting on dresses; but let it be the hidden person of the heart, with the imperishable quality of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is precious in the sight of God.â€

(1 Peter 3:3-4)

“God sees not as man sees, for man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.

(1 Samuel 16:7)

“How beautiful are the feet of those who bring the Good News of the gospel.

(Romans 10:15)

“Charm is deceitful and beauty is vain, but a woman who fears the Lord, she shall be praised.

(Proverbs 31:30)

“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites!  For you are like whitewashed tombs, which on the outside appear beautiful, but inside they are full of dead men’s bones and all uncleanness.  So you, too, outwardly appear righteous to men, but inwardly you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness.â€

(Matthew 23:25-28)

Pure Heart.

Fear of the Lord.

Gentle and Quiet Spirit.

Sharing the Good News of the Gospel.

Love.

Joy.

Peace.

Patience.

Kindness.

Goodness.

Faithfulness.

Gentleness.

Self-Control.

All from within.  All radiating from the Spirit of God.  All Truth.
