Christmas.

My favorite holiday of the entire year. The day Jesus came to Earth wrapped in flesh as our Savior. A day for celebrating love, sacrifice, and giving. A season of good cheer, family, and friends. A holiday season I thought I had to give up this year.

But God has a funny way of blessing us in the small things. Because when we arrived at BYKOTA House for the month of ministry, we were told by Rhonda, the director, that in addition to helping with the BYKOTA kids, we would become Christmas elves! We helped to put together DIY Christmas presents, Christmas crafts, and Christmas decorations. I sat in the dining room (which we dubbed the North Pole, not only for the Christmas activity, but also for the frigid air conditioning) every day, sewing, gluing, drawing, and crafting to make this Christmas special for the BYKOTA kids and the Benz family. I imagined the looks on the kids’ faces when they opened their presents on Christmas. I imagined the feeling of family and togetherness that I will miss the most this year, but that these kids get to experience every year, thanks to BYKOTA House.

Sometimes the World Race looks like living in a jungle somewhere, roughing it and making do with little. But sometimes? Sometimes it looks like creating a little Christmas magic.
