You can’t come to Japan and not participate in some origami. It’s the pinnacle of Japanese patience, orderliness, and ingenuity. As you stare at an ordinary piece of paper, it’s hard to imagine that, with a few simple folds, the two-dimensional sheet can transform into animals, cups, people, and more. But as with anything so creative, only the hand of a master, well-versed in perfection, can truly transform something so simple into fantastic shapes.

Likewise, we, as humans, tend to be flat and two-dimensional without Christ. Only when we surrender our lives to Him, and surrender to the folding, the creasing, and the change that He brings to us, can we live fantastic lives for Him. He is the Master Folder that brings amazing changes to something so simple, even when we cannot see the end result through the many folds.

And, just like origami, each of us turns into something unique and special when we submit to the folding of the Master. We could envision ourselves as something pretty cool, but under God’s guidance, the folds of our lives, while often painful and confusing, shape us into what He wants us to look like. Each crease leaves the unmistakable and irreversible mark of God. So as I submit to the plans of the Master of life’s origami, I embrace the folds He brings to my life. Because I know He can shape my life into something far better than I ever could.
