Rwanda,

How can I begin to explain to people who you are, what you’ve been through, and the LIGHT you’re walking in today…

People need to know your past to appreciate who you’ve become.

Thursday, April 7, 1994 changed you.

You lost a part of your heart that you can never get back. Some of your people will carry this loss forever, others will choose to forget and others can’t forget.

That Thursday, a spirit of hatred and death filled the hearts of the people that call you home. That day ethnic Hutu extremists decided it was right to kill off the minority Tutsi population through mass genocide. This resulted in friends betraying friends, neighbors killing neighbors, mothers seeing their children slaughtered in front of them and priests turning their backs on their communities. Death filled your land and there was no place to escape. You lost more than 1 million lives during these 100 days of massacre. Where was the world?

Today, instead of living with an open wound of hurt you have chosen to only carry a scar, to remind yourself of what was and to remember to never allow yourself to walk in that darkness again.

“For He called you out of darkness, [Rwanda], to experience His marvelous light, and now He claims you as His very own. He did this so that you would broadcast His glorious wonders throughout the world.”

1 Peter 2:9 TPT

What the enemy meant for destruction you have turned into praise.

The things you’ve seen bring me to tears, the hope you’ve found compels me to forgive and your patient spirit justifies the hardship you’ve endured.

When I speak to those that have been affected by the genocide they carry a spirit of people that have been delivered not forgotten by the Lord. Psalm 124 accurately represents their thanksgiving.

Lord, help me carry this same spirit and walk in your Light.
