Here are 30 random facts about Ethiopia and my life here.

  1. I was told lice don’t live in Africa, but Santa decided to get me some for Christmas.
  2. Ethiopia does not look like what most people think about Africa. It’s definitely not like the Lion King.
  3. Unlike what you may be thinking, Ethiopia is very cold.
  4. Cold showers mean I don’t shower every day.
  5. Inside the house where we stay, there is always 40ish people. Outside, kids are always running and playing around. When they are not in the morning, the prayer calls from the Muslim & Orthodox churches around are loud. Quiet time is not a thing.
  6. We are pros in making chocolate milk without real chocolate nor milk.
  7. Ethiopia has a different calendar, and they are in year 2012 right now!
  8. Their new years is in September.
  9. Everyone here asks me if I’m from China (cause I don’t look like white Americans, so in their heads the next option is China).
  10. Today, an Ethiopian guard asked for a picture with me, and offered to marry me. Fun stuff.
  11. I miss washing machines (we only handwash).
  12. Amharic, the main language in Ethiopia, has over 200 letters in their alphabet!! But in this village people speak Oromiffa, a dialect that is simpler than Amharic.
  13. Ethiopia is not in Europe, as my dear friend who’s been living here for a month thought. 
  14. At this point, I own only about 5 shirts.
  15. Elevation here is about 8000 ft. My lungs cannot stand running.
  16. This may Ethiopia will hopefully have their first fare democratic election in their democratic history.
  17. I brought cute Christmas lights to decorate my bed. They were burnt out in the first week cause African voltage.
  18. I basically only use my phone as my alarm.
  19. Ethiopians are direct. If they want water, they won’t say “hey, could you possibly bring me some water, please?” They will just look at you and yell “water”.
  20. The kids hate when we cut our hair or wear makeup.
  21. Pizza with sweet bread and tuna is not that bad.
  22. PeptoBismol. Essential.
  23. Ethiopia is very cheap. Except for good cereal and apples, sadly.
  24. The power goes out in our base almost every day.
  25. We are always surrounded by donkeys, goats, and cows.
  26. All Ethiopian music sounds the same.
  27. They listen to Spanish reggaetón here. Not proud.
  28. Ethiopia is said to be the birth place of coffee.
  29. Ethiopian airlines is the bomb.
  30. “Chicken or fish, but no chicken” made it for a rough 16 hour flight.

Aquí les doy 30 datos random sobre Etiopía y mi tiempo aquí.

  1. Me dijeron que piojos no serían problema en África, pero Santa decidió traerme algunos para Navidad.
  2. Etiopía no es el concepto que muchos tienen de África. Definitivamente no es como el Rey León.
  3. Al contrario de lo que muchos piensan, Etiopía es muy frío.
  4. Duchas frías = no me baño todos los días.
  5. Dentro de nuestra casa siempre hay 40 personas. Afuera, los niños siempre están corriendo y jugando. Y si no lo están, en la mañana las oraciones de las iglesias musulmanas y ortodoxas se escuchan muy fuerte. Tiempo en silencio no existe aquí.
  6. Somos profesionales en hacer leche con chocolate sin leche ni chocolate de verdad.
  7. Etiopía tiene un calendario diferente, y apenas están en el año 2012!!
  8. Su año nuevo es en septiembre.
  9. Todos aquí me preguntan si soy de China (porque no me veo blanca y macha como los gringos, así que en sus mentes la siguiente opción es China).
  10. Hoy, un guardia etíope pidió tomarse una foto conmigo y se ofreció a ser mi esposo…
  11. Extraño las lavadoras (solo lavamos a mano).
  12. Amharic es el idioma oficial en Etiopía, y tiene más de 200 letras en su alfabeto! Pero en esta aldea la gente habla Oromiffa, un dialecto que es más simple.
  13. Etiopía no está en Europa, como mi querida amiga que ha estado viviendo aquí por un mes pensaba.
  14. A este punto, solo tengo como 5 blusas.
  15. La elevación aquí es de aproximadamente 2600 msnm. Mis pulmones no pueden soportar correr.
  16. Si Dios quiere, Etiopía tendrá su primera elección democrática justa en toda su historia democrática.
  17. Traje luces navideñas para decorar mi cama. Se quemaron en la primera semana. Voltaje africano!
  18. Básicamente solo uso mi teléfono como alarma.
  19. Los etíopes son directos. Si quieren agua, no van a decir “hey, ¿me puede traer un poco de agua, por favor?” Simplemente lo ven y le gritan “agua”.
  20. Los niños odian cuando nos cortamos el pelo o usamos maquillaje.
  21. La pizza con pan dulce y atún no es tan mala.
  22. PeptoBismol. Esencial.
  23. En Etiopía todo es muy barato. Excepto por el cereal rico y manzanas, lamentablemente.
  24. La luz se va en nuestra base casi todos los días.
  25. Siempre estamos rodeados de burros, cabras y vacas.
  26. Toda la música etíope suena igual.
  27. Escuchan reggaetón en español aquí. No me enorgullece.
  28. Se dice que Etiopía es el lugar de nacimiento del café.
  29. Ethiopian Airlines es genial!
  30. “Pollo o pescado, pero no hay pollo” hizo que nuestro vuelo de 16 horas fuera interesante.
