No Longer Normal | Emily Simpson
Emily began her World Race in January 2010; only four days remain of the journey for her and 90+ others.  Here are some of her personal reflections from last month:

Two hundred ninety three days have passed since I have walked on American soil yet, I keep MOVING ON.

I remain in motion:  traveling from continent to continent, country-to-country, house to tent, hostel to sleeping bag, a vagabond lifestyle that I have come to love.  The faces continue to change, the sights always contrast, and the sounds in no way identical.

The feeling I continue to get is I AM NO LONGER NORMAL.

My NORMAL has changed.  Reality to me is different than it used to be.  My eyes have been opened.  I am no longer satisfied with a mundane lifestyle.  I find myself asking, “What do I do now that my ‘normal’ is different?”

The Finish | Austin Robertson

Austin has been one of the squad leaders of the January 2010 N Squad.  His first month of the Race was spent ministering to youth; his last month of the Race was also spent ministering to youth.  Since he first began this journey, he writes:

So much has happened…For example…

12 countries
4 continents
3 oceans
20 different ministries
66 hours of flying
126 hours on a bus
152 hours on a train
1 full trip around the world…or at least it will be when I land in Iowa on Nov 21.  I left from Des Moines, IA heading west on Jan 1 and will land in Des Moines, IA from the east.

This month has been so special and is a perfect way to end the Race…

Shakira and Monkey Fingers | Tiffany Berkowitz

Tiffany Berkowitz has been leading one of the September 2010 squads and shares many highlights from last month.  She was in Malaysia for the second time; her month was split between the city, where she got to partner with the same missionaries from her previous Race and the jungle, where she managed to eat something new – even to a World Race veteran.  Here’s the first highlight:
I had a dream about the Asli women in the jungle. Up until God gave me the dream, we had hardly ANY interaction with the women there.  They are looked down upon and are showed virtually no respect or consideration.

In my dream, Team Habibi and I were attending a wedding.  We were all in the church in the middle of the jungle, and I was in the back room with the bride.

She was taking her hair down, and she was in tears.  I asked her what had happened and she explained that her husband left her at the altar.  I walked out into the church and found women sitting in the pews sobbing.  Hundreds of them.

I walked to the front of the altar and got down on my knees.  I began to cry out for the women in the jungle, for God to hear their cries.

I heard the Lord speak the word “desire” and I knew in my heart that He deeply desired to pursue them and have them know His love for them.  I shared my dream with the team, and we all prayed for the women.

My dream was fulfilled the very next day…

One Down, Ten to Go | Rachel Duff-Banks
The October 2010 World Race Squads are in Nicaragua.  Rachel and her teammates and another team are in Ometepe, an island in the middle of a lake.

14 Racers.  53 Hours.  3 Buses.  8 Taxis.  1 hostel, 1 night on a ferry, 1 ferry, and 1 barf bag.

No Fighting?  Priceless.

We made it into Ometepe, Nicaragua.

I really had no idea what to expect.

Thankfully, there was a layout of the town right off the ferry 🙂

But as we waited for the bus from the orphanage, sitting on our big packs and eating pan dulce, I was hit with the fact that month one on the Race was over.  Guatemala was in the past, Nicaragua was the present.

We had taken a step forward on the Race, but we had also taken a step back concerning the time we have on this crazy adventure.  We now have less than 10 months on this journey. CRAZY.

Processing the Process – The Beginning | Glenalyn Hunt

Before Glenalyn and her squadmates depart, they’re debriefing the past almost-year.  Inspired by her cousin’s class project, she’s begun the process of processing this experience:
What was your favorite part of the trip?
If I had to pick one, I loved seeing God’s fingerprints on each person we met, including my team, our ministry contacts, and everyone we met…[Seeing] the unique beauty of each individual face, throughout the world, was cool. I liked traveling and seeing famous things, like Angkor Wat or the Nile, but my favorite part was meeting so many different people, so many different faces, so many different lives, and so many different definitions of beauty.
What was your least favorite?
Living with people 24/7 was kind of overwhelming [and] very stretching.  I have also used some terrible places to shower and relieve myself…
