Romania is best known for Transylvania, home to the revered Dracula.  On this stop of the September 2010 World Race, you may get see his impenetrable fortress or live the life of a gypsy.  Whatever happens, the people and this country are sure to captivate you!

  • Country Size: 238,391 sq km, slightly smaller than Oregon.
  • Populations: 22,215,421
  • Approximately 86.6% of Romanians are Eastern Orthodox. 7.5% are Protestant and 4.7% Roman
    Catholic.  The remaining 1% is either Muslim or unspecified.
  • The term Gypsy originated from the belief that the Roma people originated from Egypt.
  • Romania is home to Vlad III the Impaler, or as he is more commonly referred to as Dracula.  He is best known for his cruel and excessive punishments against his enemies.   
  • Bran Castle was believed to be the home of Dracula, and is the site where the fictional Dracula by Bram Stoker took place.

  • Poenari
    was one of Dracula’s most impervious fortresses, perched atop the
    Carpathian mountains.  To reach this castle
    you must first climb 1,500 stairs.
  • Romania is a source, transit, and destination country for human trafficking.   Women, men and children are all victims of traffic for the purposes of sexual
    exploitation, forced begging, and forced labor in the
    agriculture, construction, and service sectors
