"For to one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit" 1 Corinthians 12:8

I was at the Power and Love conference around the 1st week of October and we were learning to become love. It's through Gods lens of love, and through compassion do we see the hearts and hurts of others. It sounds so elementary, but have we really been taught this? I've gone through an internship, a semester of bible school, and gone to church for a few years, but hadn't heard the gospel message quite like this before.

It was about the 2nd or 3rd morning session of the conference. Every time I entered the sanctuary of the church I had a booming headache that wouldn’t go away until I walked out of the sanctuary. During the worship service that morning God gave me a name. Jolene. I thought it was kind of weird considering I don’t think I know a Jolene. I decided to write it down so I sat down and wrote it on my left palm. Jolene. Random. I stood back up to worship, and I got "She doesn't go to church anymore and was hurt by the church as a kid"…. Okay God, wrote it down under her name on my palm. Stood up to worship again and this time I saw a picture of her behind the counter at a coffee shop. My guess what that she worked there. It appeared to be a starbucks….pen, left palm, wrote it down.

The speaker for that morning's session was Bob Hazlett. That morning he was demonstrating the various ways we hear from God and he asked for three volunteers. He specifically wanted people that had never done 2 things, 1.) received a word of knowledge for a person. 2.) pray for the person you got the word of knowledge for, and watch God heal them immediately right in front of your eyes. I quickly launched my hand into the air, and I was picked as one of the three volunteers. I stood up and walked to the front, and as soon as I did, my headache was gone!! Okay God that's interesting, I normally don't get headaches and so I noticed this one because it had bugged me for days.

As we stood up there, Bob told us that God would show each one of us things that he would heal in the room. One of us would see a body part, one would feel something in our body for someone, and the other would hear God tell them something he was going to heal. Bob prayed and then asked us what God showed us. One of the volunteers told him that as he prayed her throat begin to hurt and so he asked the audience if anyone had a sore throat. Sure enough a lady raise her hand and said she had a sore throat. The volunteer laid hands on her throat and prayed and sure enough, God healed her the sore throat was gone.

Bob asked me what God showed me. I told him, well nothing. But God did give me the name Jolene during worship, and I have been having this headache every time I was in the sanctuary for the last few days but it immediately left when I got here. “Okay” Bob said, “Is there a Jolene in here?” No hands went up. None. “Well maybe God just healed you of a headache” Bob said, “awesome, but lets pray and ask God for something specific for someone in here.” So Bob said we’d pray again and share whatever God tells me. “Ready?” He asked. “I’m ready” I responded. Bob counted off, “1, 2, 3…Okay times up what’d God say?” I felt like God said right knee. But I wasn’t 100% sure. So Bob asked the audience, sure enough there was a man who had 3 knee surgeries on his right knee and was having another one the following week. So I laid my hand on his right knee and prayed, he tested out his new knee, and sure enough God healed him!

I thought it was awesome that I heard right knee from God and then prayed for a guy with a right knee and God healed him! But I was determined to find this Jolene who I thought worked at a Starbucks. I didn’t have to look far. After the service a lady came up to me. She said “I know this Jolene you were speaking of!”. I was all ears. The lady began to share. She said Jolene was a friend of her and her husband. Jolene had been trying to buy their house in Florida and it had been such a headache for them, in fact so much of a headache that they actually just referred to it as the “headache house”. The lady kept continued. “When you got picked by Bob and walked up there Jolene texted me…” Wow! That's cool in a weird sort of way. Maybe this is the same Jolene. So I asked her, “is Jolene mad at God and was she hurt by the church when she was younger?” The lady responded, “yes, she was raised Catholic and no longer goes to church…” Well cool God, I don’t know what any of that means but that’s pretty neat that Jolene actually exists and you told me about her and someone verified all that!

When I originally talked with that lady after the service I forgot to ask her if Jolene worked at a Starbucks, and so I asked her that night. She told me that she didn’t work at a Starbucks but she worked at her parents business and it was a deli/coffee shop! I was blown away. I told the lady that I didn’t know what all of it meant, but God knew her, knew that the house had been a headache for her and I prayed that just as my headache was healed, I prayed the house would sell and her headache would go away also. I also prayed for Jolene, that God would restore the hurt in her life and that she would feel the love of her Father.

I’ve had and continue to have similar experiences in my life. You may have as well. Those times when you know something about people that you’ve never met before and come to find out what you thought was actually true. What does that mean? It means that God still speaks. He speaks to you and through you if you are willing to listen. God will share his heart for others with you if you’ll look at them through His lens of love. I have the wonderful opportunity to pray for people everywhere I go. Sometimes God will tell me a little bit about the person. Sometimes he’ll show me something that hurts in their body, and other times he’ll tell me that they are hurting. I’m not always correct, I am still learning to hear God accurately. But I love the look that I get from people when I tell them things like “Your mom is praying for you isn’t she?” and they ask me how I know that. Well it’s simple, Jesus told me.

"Now our knowledge is partial and incomplete, and even the gift of prophecy reveals only part of the whole picture!" 1 Corinthians 13:9
