In Kazakhstan, I made good friends with a really funny guy who I share a common humor, passion for public speaking, and love for people with. During my time in his hometown, he invited me to a toastmasters club meeting that presented a really awesome opportunity. The meeting was set up for a public speech competition that my friend was a part of and each contestant had invited friends to come watch them. There were over 60 people at the meeting. Once my friend’s competition was over, there was a session held called “table topics” that involved 6 random questions. Each question was to be answered through an impromptu speech by someone volunteering in the room. I did not plan on volunteering unless I felt knowledgeable about the topic or was asked to speak by the hosts. Each of the first 5 topics were not appealing to me or my expertise and I was not asked to speak for either of them. Once the 6th topic was presented, I almost jumped out of my chair. The topic had to deal with evolution and how some people believed that humans were going backwards in advancement while others believed we were moving closer to becoming like God’s. The question asked was:

Do I believe that humans are evolving to become more like God’s or more useless (Homo-useless)?

I had to take this up with a crowd in front of me and public speaking experience that would help me effectively communicate some truth. While I wasn’t able to go into as much detail as I would have liked (I had 3 minutes), I gave what I could with the information that I had on hand by the time I got from my chair to the front of the room. Here’s a video of it below!

The truth is, we are all created from the dust but in the image of God. Apart from God, we can do nothing and are useless but with God, all things are possible. One day, Nature will call us all back to the dust and before the throne of the Lord Jesus Christ. John 3:16 is a great source for how we can be with him and not apart when that call occurs!

This was a great opportunity and I am thankful for it. Sometimes the best moments of my life have been the ones that were unplanned and on the spot. God orchestrated a moment where I was able to utilize things I’ve learned and experiences I’ve walked through to share some truth. I want to encourage you to take the opportunities that are presented to you today, no matter how big or how small they seem to be.

1 Peter 3:15

“In your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect”
