Fly Fishing has always been one of my passions in life. I love the way the line looks as it glides through the air then gently places the fly softly atop of the water. I could do that for hours and not land a fish, but be totally content. It is not uncommon to go days without getting a strike. Sometimes you can go quite a while without catching a fish. Even after hours or days of no success there is nothing like seeing the explosion of a fish hitting your fly and feeling the force on the other end of the line.

I love how Jesus says we should be “fishers” of men. It is a perfect analogy. Going out and spreading the gospel is very similar to fishing. We we will be casting our lines into very dark and stormy waters. We are presenting them with the perfect fly. JESUS. We are giving them the opportunity to latch on and be saved for eternity.

Just like fishing we can have those hours and days that feel pointless. You feel like nothing is happening and you are failing. We have to remember there is always someone hungry. Always someone hungry and wanting to follow Jesus. It may take a few failed casts but it will happen sooner or later. Jesus is the perfect bait. He will never fail.

One of my biggest worries is about getting up and speaking. I hate being in front of crowds. While writing this and using my dorky fishing analogies I realized if I just speak truth I can’t fail. Jesus is the perfect fly to cast into a broken world. It doesn’t matter how much I butcher the cast Jesus won’t fail me. Jesus will still be able to reach a broken world even through a broken person like me.
