I really wanted to title this “DC’s Most Famous Morning Show Host…,” but then I realized I wasn’t sure that was accurate. So I changed it. But, here we go…

Years ago, when I was a wee lass, Donnie Simpson used to be on the radio. Any morning we were in the car, my mom would flip back and forth between Tom Joyner, Rus Parr (when he was on-air with Olivia Foxx and when 96.3 didn’t have leftover scraps for a morning show) and Donnie. I want a huge fan of any of the shows, because they talked too much and didn’t play enough music.

But, there was one part of Donnie’s show that I looked forward to every single day I got to hear it, and my mom never missed it.

Everyday when I was a kid, he would play “Jesus Is Love” by the Commodores at the very end of his show. He had some little thing he used to say before it, but I don’t remember that. I do, however, remember that song.

When I was in Haiti, I downloaded some songs about God and Jesus that I really like. All of them date back to my childhood, that time when I really formed my relationship with God.

And while they’re all great and all have a lot to say, not a single one of them means as much to me as “Jesus Is Love.” Part of that is because before I really understood who and what God was, Lionel Ritchie and Donnie Simpson explained it to me every weekday morning between 9:55 and 10am. And part of it is that every time I listen to it, no matter where I am spiritually, mentally or emotionally, it reminds me that Jesus loves me, and that He’s all mine. They’re is nothing that I can’t do with His help. He has never left me, even in those moments that I thought He had. I know when I look back at the scenes flashing in the sky as I walk along the beach, I’ll only see one pair of footprints at the hard parts. But that’s because He was carrying me, not because He wasn’t there (reference to one of my favorite poems, but that’s for another day).

If you’ve never heard it, take a second to listen. It’s good. I’m listening to it as I’m typing this. Because it’s a great song. And God gave Lionel Ritchie a pretty sweet voice.

XOXO from Huánuco

P.S. I have another deadline coming up. I need a couple thousand dollars by December 1st or I will have to go home ?? So, of you can, donate! Every little bit helps.
