Why am I writing a blog about this if I supposedly don’t like advertising that I come from a financially blessed family? Because I think that through my upbringing, God has taught me an incredible lesson. And I believe that God wants me to share that lesson. I believe that God can use this testimony as a metaphor to how His kingdom works and what it looks like to live with a wealth mindset.
Let me go on a semi-brief tangent. I know this might be a long series of blogs, but if you stick with me, I hope and expect that you will be as blessed as I was through God’s revelation of this concept in my life. When I asked the Lord for a word of purpose over the race back in September, He gave me the word “Identity.” I knew this meant He was going to speak to me and those around me about our identities as children of the God of the universe. Since then, He has given me a different word or theme for each month. In the Philippines I learned about living in the new covenant. In Malaysia, I learned about freedom in Christ. In Thailand, I learned that God is “Immanuel.” Finally, in Cambodia, God taught me about inheritance. I knew each of these things was important, but not until I got into Cambodia, did I realize how they were all connected. We’ll revisit that later.
This idea of inheritance came one day when I was reading in Colossians. Colossians 1:12 says “…giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified us to share in the inheritance of the saints in light.” I sat there thinking, “Okay, God has qualified to share in the inheritance with other believers. What does that look like?” I read it over and over. Heaven after I die? Most definitely. But what about now? In human terms, an inheritance is given when there is a death. But does that mean I have to wait until I die to receive this? So I started doing a word study on inheritance. There are A LOT of passages regarding the word “inheritance” and many more on another word the Bible uses for this concept, “portion.” Then I found Ephesians 1:11 which says, “In Him (Jesus), also we have obtained an inheritance…” Key word: Obtained. That’s in the past tense. It’s been obtained for us through the death of Jesus Christ. So I think about earthly inheritance given when there is a death. Now I apply that concept to kingdom inheritance. There are riches stored up for our inheritance and there already was a death. I am obligated to conclude that we can receive and live in our inheritance now. The more I studied, the more God revealed to me, the more I was absolutely blown away. What I started coming away with after each time I revisited the topic of inheritance was that
