Feb 3rd-4th

Went to church with Ha and then went to her house for dinner. Going to someone’s house for dinner is always a bit scary because you never know what to expect. So I always imagine the absolute worst then I’m usually pleasantly surprised.
We get there and there are snacks on the table. I see these weird fruit things that I was given to try on the bus that are the worst things I’ve ever eaten in my life: salty, sweet, gingery weird textured goo with a pit in the middle. But that was just one of the several snacks out; they also had these homemade candies make of sugar and nuts…so good!

Another dish I heard about on the bus was square cake: side note-I love cake.

This cake is made of rice, leaves and meat. Hmm… ok not what I was expecting but I’ll try it. It wasn’t too bad, I actually liked it and they had this fish sauce to go on it. Yum! We also had rice with beans, a hot veggie dish, and onion chalets. It was a great dinner. Then it was followed by shots of rice wine, which tasted more like the strongest liquor ever. We ended the night with Sprite; they wanted to continue to serve us with everything they had. They were an amazing family, full of love.

The next morning, we are planning on meeting up with Linh to visit her family and then go to her pagoda, or temple. We get there, expecting square cake for breakfast. We get there and there are snacks out, tea and more SHOTS! Immediately upon arriving we were served tea and snacks and handed a microphone for some good ol’ karaoke. Yes friends, karaoke!

Karaoke starts us off with, when ‘2 become 1’ then ‘Hero’ then Tom Jones, ‘its not unusual’ it was a RIOT! Then we sit on the floor for more square cake, yum, pork fat, not so yum, rice, spring rolls, chicken, and some carrots and cucumber slices.

Then we went to the temple with Linh, Hien, and Hung. While at the temple, each of us got to share the gospel in a different way, or share our testimony.

I shared with a little monk; we had a ton of fun playing games and laughing at each other. During this process, we’re learning a lot about Buddhism as well.

After we leave, all the girls want to take us to their home to meet their families and share in the New Year festivities with us. Each family welcomed us lovingly and were eager to have us visit and bless us with tea and food. We end the day at the top of a hotel with friends of Linh’s family drinking Hot Milk Chocolate. We plan on staying at their hotel when we return from our excursion to Dong Tow.

God is just giving us opp after opp. It’s been so exciting.

Next step-find out how to get to Dong Tow!

Isaiah 58:11- The Lord will guide you always; he will satisfy your needs in a sun-scorched land and will strengthen your frame. You will be like a well-watered garden, like a spring whose waters never fail.
