This month I am part of the Unsung Heroes team in Nicaragua. The purpose behind Unsung Heroes is to find people, orgnizations, ministries, and churches who are working for the Lord, but no one knows about them. We want to find them and give them encouragement and support. Even if World Race or AIM does not partner with them in the future, we will be telling their story and supporting them through prayer and possibly helping them for a few days.
When we first arrived here in Rivas, we knew no one. One day, our group decided to pryaer walk around the city. I was partners with Debbie, and as we walked we prayed. I suddenly asked Debbie what verse was on her mind at that moment, and she said Proverbs 16:9 “We can make our plans, but the LORD determines our steps.”
The next moment I heard a song in Spanish, but caught some words like “Gracia” and “Dios.”. I stopped dead in the street, and then went to the gated home from which the music was coming from. It was indeed a Christian song and we talked further with a woman there who was hanging up laundry. We ended up talking to her husband on her cell phone to find out more about her church and he invited us to go with them to a service that very night.

Other prayer partners stumbled upon another church that had an amazing dance ministry. We would visit both churches that week, and a dance practice, and accompany the dance ministry to Masaya, Nicaragua, where they would perform and lead over a hundred kids to Christ through their skits and dances! We filmed, took pictures, and prayed for the team as they did their ministry. They also did a version of the Evangelism dance “Everything” in a way which I haven’t seen before!

On one of our “off days” Victoria Peirce and I were walking on the streets of Rivas trying to find a cheap and breezy dress to buy. I never found the dress, but on our walk we did find three potential partners for AIM. We passed by an Christian school that teaches English so we decided to go in and talk with them. Then as we were passing by an electronics store, we heard the song “Oceans’ being sung in Spanish. We doubled back and talked with a young man there who had played this song on a stereo. We ended up getting the name of his church, “Lluvias de Gracia.” We went to that church later and found out that it was connected to many ministries that we had been looking into. And then, purchasing a hot dog for lunch, we were asked by the vendor if we wanted to go and see his church, which also does a lot of ministries in the area.
So in a matter of three days, we went from having no contacts to plugging into a network of churches and ministries–just by walking down the streets with our eyes and ears open.

Our team name this month is “Plumas en el Viento,” which means “feathers in the wind”–and that’s exactly where we want to be. Wherever He wants to blow us, we want to go.
