Traveling is new to me, as is backpacking. I never thought I would be on a journey as I am now. It’s fun, confusing, shocking, sweaty, encouraging, boring, crazy, lonely, fulfilling, tiresome, exhilarating and never as you ever expected it would be. Traveling is wonderful, and I truly do wish everyone has the opportunity to take advantage of the lessons it teaches us about others and about ourselves.

I’ve gathered a few of my favorite travel quotes that inspire me to experience and see more everyday. I hope they inspire you too, whether you’re traveling around your hometown or across the ocean.

“Investment in travel is an investment in yourself.” – Matthew Karsten

“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.” – Mark Twain

“Remember that happiness is a way of travel, not a destination.” – Roy M. Goodman

“I see my path, but I don’t know where it leads. Not knowing where I’m going is what inspires me to travel it.” – Rosalia de Castro

“You don’t have to be rich to travel well.” – Eugene Fodor

“A journey is best measured in friends, rather than miles.” – Tim Cahill

“Bizarre travel plans are dancing lessons from God.” – Kurt Vonnegut

“Do not follow where the path may lead. Go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson

“Our battered suitcases were piled on the sidewalk again; we had longer ways to go. But no matter, the road is life.” – Jack Kerouac

“I read; I travel; I become.” – Derek Walcott

“We travel, initially, to lose ourselves; and we travel, next to find ourselves. We travel to open our hearts and eyes and learn more about the world than our newspapers will accommodate. We travel to bring what little we can, in our ignorance and knowledge, to those parts of the globe whose riches are differently dispersed. And we travel, in essence, to become young fools again- to slow time down and get taken in, and fall in love once more.” – Pico Lyer
