That's the very first question I asked myself after submitting my application for The World Race, and I've asked myself that many more times since then.
I imagine that most people that decide to do The World Race have very similar thoughts. After all, you're signing up to leave everything you've known for a year, and you have to raise about $16,000 to do it! You have to say goodbye to your family, your friends, your home to go serve in countries that you know very little about and never thought you would visit.
For me, this means I'll be leaving the only place I've ever lived, Athens, Georgia. The longest I've ever been away from Athens was a little over 3 months when I worked on the outdoor recreation staff at Lifeway's Glorieta Conference Center in New Mexico. But even there I still had parts of home. I was going out there with 3 people that I was already friends with, plus several other people from Georgia. Not to mention I was still in the US and only an hour away from the nearest Chick-Fil-A (those of you from the South know how important that is). But now I'm signing up to leave the country for 11 months and going to 11 countries that I've never been to to share the love of God. That's insane.
After pondering this question over the last few weeks, I finally figured out the answer. Yes, I am insane. And I think that's exactly what God wants. We serve a God that loves people that do insane things for Him. Just look at the stories in the Bible. A lot of them are insane. But they all served one purpose: furthering the Kingdom of God.
It's time for me to let God write an insane story in my life. I want to go do insane things for God. I want to see God reach people in insane ways. I'm ready to give up everything I've known and am comfortable with to tell people about a God that loves them. In the words of Isaiah, "Here am I. Send me!" Also, I'm insane.
