Third World County…we hear that said and our mind goes to the commercials asking for pennies a day to save a young child in some far off location. The reality of living in a third world country is something that is totally foreign to the typical American mind. Yesterday, a dear friend of this ministry died from worms…worms! Something so easy to treat killed a great friend and christian. He had gone to the "doctors," but they could find nothing wrong with him since his malaria and cholera tests came back negative. Sadly, this was not a freak misdiagnosis…but common health care.
Simple things such as travel become an odyssey of frustration and futility as vehicles constantly break down from lack of maintenance. All food must be carefully prepared to ward off disease and only water from bottles is safe to drink. It is so strange that the locals face the potential for death with every meal and drink of water. In a third world country, the basic necessities of life can kill you.
I wish I could send the sights and smells to you through the computer to give you a taste of daily life for millions of people who live in these conditions. It took our team a while to process what is going on around us. I will be honest and say that I felt hopeless. All I could do was look around and say that things were never going to get better here. However, our team began making a conscious effort to look for the good around us…count our blessings. Once we started looking, we began to see light springing forth everywhere. I relate it to flowers pushing up through the concrete of a parking lot. Cracks of light are forming in the darkness, but massive amounts of prayer is needed for the people of Haiti. I ask you to take some time out of your day to ask the Father to step down into this dark place and bring freedom and healing. Thank you and we love you!!
