While in Haiti we did a lot of things we had never before experienced. So, never had we ever…
- Helped rebuild a school and church building for a local community that was destroyed in the earthquake.
- Played with orphans at Hands and Feet Orphanage.
- Helped paint a preschool room like the ark.
- Preached with the help of a translator at a Haitian church.
- Hammered and Crowbarred from 8:30am to 3:30pm
- Rode in a flatbed truck everywhere we went.
- Sat beside a guy with a sawed off shotgun at the bank.
- Seen the aftermath of a wreck where the police shot a man in the head to get him to stop (he did not die as far as we know).
- Helped cook massive amounts of food over charcoal in a Haitian kitchen.
- Laughed with Haitian cooks while kneading homemade bread.
- Ate SUPER cheap lobster right on the beach that was pulled out of the lobster pot, cut in half, and immediately put over a wood fire to cook.
- Sat through a Haitian church service with a translator talking constantly in our ear.
- Had to help filter the water that our group needed to drink for the week.
- Had a Haitian women hand wash our clothes clean that we thought were permanently ruined.
- Seen hopelessness in the eyes of so many people.
- Cried because we were happy about a date night organized by our team for us with air conditioning, cheeseburgers, Cokes and Reece's.
- Helped local Haitians with their English.
- Killed a spider as big as the palm of your hand that was living in our shower.
- Slept in a puddle of our own sweat.
- Played Chicken, Chicken, Pig with children (Haitian version of Duck, Duck, Goose).
- Became accustom to the smell of burning garbage.
- Slept outside with ocean waves putting us to sleep.
- Heard first hand accounts of children being sacrificed to the voodoo gods.
- Had personal encounters with the forces of Satan.
-
Rode out a massive hurricane (Sandy) in a thatch roof pavilion.
