Before The World Race began, our team thought it would be a good idea to get away from worldly things. A lot of my team and I decided to fast, some chose to fast from coffee while others chose to fast from fast food or social media. I fasted from social media for 21 days. We had a daily devotion from the Bible app, we facetimed at six in the morning every single day. Some of my team had it worse that I did because they live in different time zones. We shared about what the Lord was teaching us. It was easy to get on social media because no one is around me, but I kept my integrity.

Fasting is not eat or drink for a certain about of days. Fasting is a way to take away something that is blocking your intimacy with the Lord, like food, sleep, especially social media. It is a time of prayer and of digging into his Word.  Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is-his good, pleasing and perfect will (Romans 12:2). To replace the things your run to, to satisfy our life, but to replace with the Lord are all good reasons to fast.

When we fast, do not put on a sad face, and tell the whole world that you’re fasting. We fast to have intimacy with the Lord, we do not fast to be honored by people. When you fast, do not look somber as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show others they are fasting. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full (Matthew 6:16-17)

Fasting is mentioned a lot in the scripture, many disciples, prophets and Jesus fasted. Jesus fasted to have connection with the Lord and to acknowledge all the miracles and everything He did came from the Father. Even Jesus fasted to show his reliance upon the strength of the Father. Jesus also quoted the scripture when he was in need. He did that so we could realise our depency is from the Lord not from earthly things. Jesus answered, “ It is written man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.”

To be real, I don’t always run to the Lord when I feel alone, I have no choice whether I like it or not. While I was fasting, my  life felt empty and hunger, there’s a God who can fill my life. The Thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly (John 10:10)  Fasting is almost a way to force myself to call upon him because we have nothing else to run to. When I was fasting, it made me realise the world doesn’t run my life, I have a God that die for me, He is much more important than the worldly things. I  often get buried in the world, just forget how good God is and how many great things God has in my life. Don’t let the time of fasting be the only time you can spend with the Lord, but build your intimcity with the Lord everyday.
