I just wanted to write a blog about the differences that I have seen between the idols and beliefs of different religions, and that of someone who believes in living God.
Don’t expect this to be an exhaustive list, because I couldn’t possible do that in one short blog. I only wish to point out the areas that stood out to me while being in Nepal.
Other Religions:
- Idols made from human hands
- Must be reached by a certain amount of works, prayers or actions
- Manipulated by human efforts
- Demands sacrifice in order to achieve something
- Claims to give great reward, but can never give what is promised
- Draws people in through fear or false claims
- Has zero power over anything
- Unpredictable ( flippant )
Christianity
- God, not made by human hands, but has forever existed
- Cannot be reached through human efforts, but only by grace through faith
- Unchanging, completely sovereign. Cannot, by His very nature, be manipulated by humans.
- Became the sacrifice so we could receive eternal life
- Gives promised and always fulfills them
- Draws people in because of righteousness, love, goodness etc..
- Has complete power over everything
- Unchanging (slow to anger and abounding in compassion)
This list in very tiny to all that could be said, but these are the ones that I think of most often when I see idol worship. My heart breaks for the people who are in bondage to the idea that they can be saved by a statue made by human hands. It reminds me of when Paul talks about how the people began to serve the creature rather than the Creator. ( Romans 1:22-23)
Yet even in the midst of all these false gods, I know that my God will be shown to be the one and only living God. And all people will bow down and acknowledge who He is. How I can hardly wait for the day!
If any of you have anything ones to add to the list, please do! I would love to see through your eyes the differences you see between false gods, and the true God!
