Across the lots of devastation
A hungry wind does blow
Its howling fills the gutted buildings
It rushes past empty ground
With nothing there to stop it
It's lost, nothing to be found
The land looks different now
The houses there are gone
No children fill the school yard
Crosses hold their memorial
Reminding everyone who sees
Of futures cut too short
I knew that as I walked
I'd find broken houses, broken trees
I also thought I'd find
Lives ripped from their foundations
With broken spirits, broken souls
But these people hold the victory
God's hope was overwhelming
On every block, in every smile
They work hard to fix their houses
But their lives were not destroyed
They stand strong, united
With support on every side
I stand humbled in my faith
Strengthened by their brokenness
Genuine grief churning with sovereign hope
Communities loving us
When we came to love them
Amidst the rubble lies blessing untold,
Disastrous hope
