Guys, Moses makes me laugh.

Don’t get me wrong, Moses is the man.  But I find that he’s more like ourselves than you’d expect for a guy that rescued an entire nation out of slavery.

Moses made excuses with the best of them.  At one point he even tried to get out of going back to Egypt by telling God he had a speech impediment.  I laughed here.  As if God was going to reply “Oh.  Ya know what Moses?  You’re right.  I didn’t even think about that speech impediment I created you with.”

I chuckled.  Hopefully you did.  I mean, I thought that line of Moses’ dialect was humorous.  Why?  Because I think we all know it was a TERRIBLE excuse.  I mean why would you even try that as an excuse?  I’m hoping by this point in Moses and God’s conversation we’re thinking.. “C’mon Moses, just do it.  You don’t know how awesome this is going to get.  You’re about to be apart of something great and divine.  Stop making excuses because you’re scared.  Just do it.  If only you knew that God would use you to part a sea.  Or turn the Nile into blood.  C’mon Moses just do it.”

We know how the story goes.  If only Moses knew at that point what the future would entail.  He’s got an entire audience behind him thinking.. “Moses, don’t miss out on this.”

This is why Moses makes me laugh.  Because his excuses are comparable to something like…

“God listen, I know you want me to sit with that guy over there, but his clothes are dirty and probably smell.  I can’t be associated with that.”

or

“I know she’s sick.  I would visit her but it’s such a long drive.  Plus, I’m sure she has family that is taking care of that.”

or even

“I should probably read my bible today, but I’ve been working so much lately.  God, I should really just relax tonight.”

Moses, that guy God used to free a nation?  He made excuses like we do.  And when Moses made his excuses we were all thinking.. “Moses, if only you knew what God’s going to do with you if you stop making excuses.”

Eventually, God set Moses straight.  Overtime, the excuses vanished because he trusted God enough to know they weren’t worth it.  We know how the story ends, but I’m sure Moses had no idea God would use him to part a sea, or check Pharaoh into place, or lead an entire nation of people out of slavery.  While the entire time we’re thinking “Moses, you’ve gotta do it” as we jump with joy of what’s to come.

My point? Excuses are dumb guys.  Look at what they hold you back from…  Parting a sea?  Freeing a nation?  Guess we’ll never know if we keep making them.

Thanks for reading.

P.S. – I pull a Moses all the time, making excuses left and right.  Months ago I decided to stop making excuses as to why I shouldn’t apply for The World Race.. since then God has used His people to provide infinite amounts of encouragement and financially support 75% of my race..  that’s over $12,000.  Thanks to God for letting you shatter my excuses.
