We made it to Honduras safe and sound. We have been here for about a week now and it is absolutely beautiful. The tress, flowers, the mountains, and the people all shine with amazing colors. As we entered into this country for the 1st time it was like stepping into a gigantic green house of some sort. All of the lush green leaves and the many different amounts of colors in the flowers almost hypnotize your eyes, making it difficult to look away.
As we drove deeper and deeper into Honduras, we learned a little bit more of what were doing and who we were going to be working with.
A man named Victor let us stay in his church for the night in a town called Gracias, Honduras. The next morning Victor took us 40 minutes down the road in the back of his truck to an even smaller town where we met another man at another church. The man we met is named Jesus, and he is a traveling pastor/missionary. Jesus is the pastor of a small church that we would be working and partnering with.
Jesus had the biggest smile on his face and quickly remembered our names. He showed where we were going to be staying. A two roomed building that was connected to the church. Here we set up all of our sleeping pads, sleeping bags and clotheslines. Little did we know that this two-roomed building that we were staying in was actually where Jesus lived. He had moved out for the month so we could stay here. Nobody asked him to do this; he simply did it himself without us knowing.
As we began to get to know Jesus over this past week, we realized how humble and simple of a man he is. He literally will give up anything and everything for the sake of the Lord and will do it with a smile on his face. Through our broken Spanish and his broken English, we found out that we will be talking to the locals and seeing if we could help them in anyway we can; whether that means physical, spiritual, or emotional.
The last couple of days we have been going to the local’s houses and talking with them, which is something that at 1st, I wasn’t too excited about. But as we continue to go to houses, we get to hear people’s stories about where they have been, what they have gone through, and what is going on in their life now. Yesterday for example, we got to hear from a woman in her house whose Son and grandson died. She was able to ask us questions about Jesus and baptism and we were given to bring her some clarity and pray for her. It was an amazing experience.
So as we continue to hear more people’s stories and grow stronger as a team, not only do we learn more about each other but we also learn about the normal people of Honduras. Our team may have heard stories about some people’s lives that any other outsider may never hear, and that is such a blessing.
