Digging a Grave
A Four Part Thought Process

Part: 1

James A. Mancaster had what most people would consider as an ordinary life. He paid his bills on time, spent his time watching TV, and spending time with his wife. He was slightly overweight and was around 5’9, a mustache sat above his big smile that his wife loved so much. James lived in a pretty big town where everyone’s business was their own except for the occasional breaking news scandal or the rare screaming matches that the neighboring couple had.
The one thing that may have made James stick out was his profession, he was a gravedigger. He lived a couple of miles from the graveyard and would often ride his bike to work to save gas. When him and his wife went to get-togethers or parties and people asked him what he did for a living he had no problem telling them about his profession, but he knew what kind of reaction he would get from the people that he told. People would say things like “oh wow, I’ve never met someone who actually does that”, “is that a scary job?” or “have you seen any ghosts?” James had his go-to answers that he would share and would tell them about a time when he thought he may have seen something like a ghost but he wasn’t too sure. He would always end by saying “well as long as people keep dying I still have a job”, then the people would laugh and the conversation would move on to another topic.

On Monday, James had to go back to work just like every other person in his town. He hopped on his bike and made his way over to work, which took him about 15 minutes or so. When he got there he grabbed a couple of shovels and made his way to where the gravesite was.
He began to dig another grave just as he did every other one. At this point he had lost count on how many graves he had dug in his lifetime but he knew that the graveyard was a lot less full when he 1st started. To pass time while he dug, James would listen to audiobooks on his MP3 player that was given to him this past Christmas, and this particular day he was listening to a book about an infamous captain of a ship and the crew’s adventures while out on the vast ocean. Before he knew it James was deep into the earth and making great progress like usual. As the book went on so did his digging.
Just then James realized what a predicament he just put himself in. as he slowly lifted his shovel, water began to creep around his boots and leisurely covered the surface he was standing on. This meant that James had dug too far, which was a beginner’s mistake. The last time he hit water was when he just started off digging graves and it hasn’t happened since. James knew that he would have to start over, so he reached for his ladder so he could climb out of the hole that he dug himself into. Just then he realized that he was grabbing for air and his ladder wasn’t there.
