Tell me this:
Have you ever just had one encounter with someone and then the next time you see them state:
I am your servant and am ready to serve you and wash the feet of my lord’s servants. 1 Samuel 25:41
Yeah, me neither, but you know, I have a desire to say it now.
I have been reading through 1 Samuel this month and today God made His lovely creation, Abigail, stand out to me. This is a very short “Teresa’s paraphrase version” of what happened. I recommend you read the real deal on your own! Basically, Abigail was married to a jerk and David (soon to be the king, well actually he already was, but the king before him was on the hunt to kill David) had some of his men go to Abigail’s husband and ask for some supplies since they had shown protection and consideration for his shepherds. But her husband insulted them. David became angry and went to seek revenge. Abigail heard of this and very quickly went to David with all sorts of supplies. David saw her heart and wisdom and accepted her gift and determined not harm her family. When Abigail told her husband David”s original intention and what she had done to prevent it, he was in such shock that his heart failed and he died a few days later. David asked Abigail to be his wife. And this was her response:
I am your servant and am ready to serve you and wash the feet of my lord’s servants. 1 Samuel 25:41
Can you imagine! This is so profound; so much is packed into this one liner!
As I sat and prayed about what I just read, I realized this is what I want to be able to say to Jesus every day!
3 big points:
Identity
Eagerness
Love
Abigail states her identity. She IS his servant.
She not only says this, but follows it with action…ready, eager ….”I will and am serving you.”
Finally, she will serve those he loves…..wash those nasty feet!
Abigail receives David’s marriage proposal with great humility, seeing that she is unworthy of such a position, says that she would even be eager to do the job of the poorest person in the family.
What a woman!
I want to go to God and say, I am you servant, and I am eager to serve YOU and not only that but to LOVE the people YOU love and not just love them but show them I respect them because I respect YOU! I know I am unworthy of being His bride, His daughter, being in His family. What an honor He gives me to not only serve Him, but I even get to do what seems to me the worst job…. however, in reality, the most beautiful, because it is all for Him!
Abigail was a wise woman. She did not know David, but she did know he was God’s chosen. By serving David she was really serving her God.
Let’s take her 18 profound words and put them into practice……want to join me?
It was just before the Passover Festival. Jesus knew that the hour had come for him to leave this world and go to the Father. Having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end.
The evening meal was in progress, and the devil had already prompted Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot, to betray Jesus. Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under his power, and that he had come from God and was returning to God; so he got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist. After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him.
