He walked through the gate. As his eyes moved around the roofed area he saw one girl watching a movie, another reading a book, someone listening to their Ipod, one guy napping in his hammock, another typing an email, another doing a study, and someone writing a note.

As he approached his American friend and sat down to chat, he questioned,
“Do you guys like each other? Are you sick of each other? You are all in a room together but don’t seem to be very friendly.”
Perspective is huge! The Costa Rica fellow was thrown off, and rightly so.
Since being on the Race, for safety reasons, we are never allowed to be alone. Even if we go down the little street to the store we have to bring someone. Plus there is never a place you can go to be really by yourself. You are lucky if you get to be in the bathroom all alone.
That being said, we have learned to all be together but to create some solitude. Even though there may be a million things going on around us we have adapted by getting into our own little world in crowded spaces. Now for the most part this is good. We love each other, but need a break at times. To stay sane we need that alone time, some more than others. But sometimes we are so good at it that we don’t even notice when a guest walks in.
That was what happened to poor Jarier. None of us noticed when he walked into our living room/bedroom.
This made me think about how often this happens to us. When do I walk into a room and make judgments without even realizing it? Or how often do I miss opportunities when I am in my own little world?
More on this in the next blog.
