Tammy called the other day and had run into a legal issue with her fundraising raffle… we did some research and discovered that there are some legal barriers to fundraisers!
I wanted to pass along this website – http://www.ogc.umich.edu/faq_raffle.html#raffle – and let you know that when planning a fundraiser, it’s better to avoid the element of “chance” – i.e., raffles, lotteries, bingo, etc. Instead, focus on providing something for people to purchase – i.e., auction, bake sale, benefit concert. However, remember that when you sell a product you cannot provide a tax deductible receipt to the people who purchase it.
